Categorized as one of William Shakespeare’s late romances, The Winter’s Tale is a mysterious and magical fable about loss and redemption. We travel across two countries and sixteen years as we watch the healing power of time to mend broken relationships. Leontes, King of Sicilia, is struck with sudden jealousy as he watches his childhood friend, the King of Bohemia, and wife form a friendship. His wife Hermione is pregnant, and as his jealousy grips him tighter and tighter, he starts to believe that the baby is actually his friend’s child. His jealousy turns to tyranny, and before long Leontes destroys his family and lifelong friendship. Once he finally sees the error in his actions, it is too late. Or is it?

Although the play is called The Winter’s Tale, it is about the passage through different seasons of life. The heartbreak of winter in Sicilia turns to the joy of summer in Bohemia as we jump forward sixteen years in time. In Bohemia, we meet shepherds and clowns, attend a huge dance party, and witness the power of young love. The magical turn of events at the end of the play bring families and friends back together again in the most unlikely of circumstances.
